Frequently Asked Questions

What is dialysis?

Dialysis is a treatment for kidney failure that removes waste materials and extra fluids from the blood by filtering them through a special membrane or fine filter.

What happens when the kidneys stop functioning properly?

Kidney malfunction can result in the body not being able to get rid of excess fluid thus staying in the body.  Urine output may also decrease.  Waste and toxin build-up and high blood pressure occur.  When the kidney is damaged, the body is not able to produce enough red blood cells.

How is kidney disease diagnosed?

Many of the causes of kidney failure cannot be predicted or prevented.  Others, such as diabetes are present for many years before they develop into kidney failure.  When this is so, there is a possibility for early diagnosis and prevention of progression of kidney failure.  There are early detection and prevention programs targeted particularly at high risk groups such as those who have diabetes, high blood pressure or a family history of kidney disease.
