People who suffer from epilepsy, schizophrenia, anti-social personality disorders, psychosis or clinical depression should consult their doctors first before approaching a hypnotherapist. Because there is no licensing procedures that limit the practice of hypnotherapy to medical practitioners, hypnotherapists are not regulated in any way. There is a big risk that a hypnotherapist might encounter difficulties in controlling or ending the trance-like state induced in a patient thus necessary precautions are needed. Hypnotherapists should also be forewarned not to give suggestions during hypnosis that run counter to a patient’s moral beliefs.
