Causes and Risk Factors
With cancer being one of the leading causes of death all over the world, people are becoming more and more aware of the threats of this disease and are finding ways to lessen the risk of getting cancer. What causes cancer?
Though the cause of cancer is not pinpointed to a single factor, there are some risk factors which increase the chances of getting cancer. The broad categories of these are:
- Food
There are some foods and food additives which have been linked to cancer. However, there is no solid evidence as of yet. Some of these foods are artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and meat (especially burnt meat).
- Genetics
Cancer may be caused be defective genes. People with a history of cancer should take extra precautions as a mutated gene might have been inherited. Genetic testing is advised.
- Tobacco
Smoking greatly increases the risk for cancer. Other organs such as the kidneys, pancreas, cervix, and stomach are affected as well.
- Weight and Physical Activity
Studies have shown a correlation between the amount of physical exercise a person engages in and the risk for cancer. A regime of 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week is recommended.
- Workplace and Environment
Exposure to certain chemicals and radioactivity increases the risk for cancer. High risk materials are asbestos and benzene. Extreme exposure to the sun may also increase the risk for skin cancer.
