Autism
Autism is a disorder in which a young child cannot develop normal social relationships, has problems with verbal and non-verbal communication, behaves in compulsive and ritualistic ways and has severely limited activities and interests. It is the most common of the pervasive developmental disorders which usually prevents the development of normal intelligence. The condition is different from mental retardation although many children with autism have both. The disorder is more common in boys than in girls. The specific cause of autism has not been established although the fact that it is a biological disorder has already been clearly determined. It is believed that several chromosomal abnormalities contribute to the development of autism. The possibility of prenatal infections having a role in the development of autism is being considered. What has been established though is that poor parenting, adverse childhood conditions and vaccinations do not cause autism.
